  13. What's New in Acrobat Reader 2.1 for Windows
  14.  
  15. Acrobat Reader 2.1 now runs under Windows NT 3.5 (or later), Windows 3.1,
  16. and Windows 95, as well as OS/2 2.11 or later in Windows compatibility mode.
  17.  
  18. Adobe's ATM technology for rendering Type 1 fonts has been built into
  19. Acrobat Reader 2.1 for Windows so it is no longer necessary to install ATM
  20. on Windows systems.
  21.  
  22. Acrobat Reader 2.1 now accepts some specially enabled plug-ins, such as
  23. Weblink and Movie. This allows Acrobat Reader users to take advantage of new
  24. capabilities in PDF files created with Acrobat Exchange, for example
  25. following World Wide Web (URL) links or viewing QuickTime and AVI (Windows
  26. only) movies within a PDF document.
  27.  
  28. Printing quality has been improved to non-PostScript printers.
  29.  
  30. Limitations in printing to some non-Postscript printers with non-square
  31. pixels (some fax modems and dot-matrix printers) have been removed.
  32.  
  33. Acrobat Reader 2.1 generates DSC-compliant PostScript when used with the
  34. AdobePS 3.0 (or later) printer driver.
  35.  
  36. System Requirements
  37.  
  38.    *  386-, 486-based, or Pentium-based personal computer
  39.    *  Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows 95, or Windows NT 3.5 or greater
  40.    *  4 MB application RAM
  41.    *  4 MB hard disk space
  42.    *  1.44 MB 3.5" floppy disk drive
  43.  
  44. Installation Instructions
  45.  
  46. The installation process is controlled by the Acrobat Installer application.
  47. This installation will create a program group named "Adobe Acrobat" and
  48. install the new Acrobat Reader 2.1 application and support files in the
  49. c:\acroread directory.
  50.  
  51. The installation process does not install ATM, edit any INI files on your
  52. system, and a does not force a restart of Windows after completion.
  53.  
  54. To Install Acrobat(TM) Reader 2.1:
  55.  
  56.   1.  From the Windows Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu.
  57.   2.  Type: [drive]:\acroread.exe
  58.   3.  Follow the instructions on your screen.
  59.  
  60. Installation requires approximately 4 MB of free hard disk space.
  61.  
  62. How Does The Installer Handle Adobe Type Manager (ATM) and Fonts?
  63.  
  64. Acrobat Reader 2.1 for Windows does not install ATM.
  65.  
  66. If TrueType versions of Times, Helvetica, Courier, Symbol, or Zapf Dingbats
  67. are installed on your system, they are not replaced nor moved.
  68.  
  69. Troubleshooting
  70.  
  71. If you experience problems installing or using Acrobat Reader 2.1 for
  72. Windows, consider the following:
  73.  
  74.      If you downloaded the Reader from an online service or internet site,
  75.      check that the file transferred properly.
  76.  
  77. Errors During Acrobat Reader Installation
  78.  
  79.      When launched, the Acrobat Reader installer (ACROREAD.EXE) makes a copy
  80.      of the ACROREAD.EXE file in the temp directory specified in the
  81.      AUTOEXEC.BAT file. When the drive and directory listed in the "Set
  82.      temp=" line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file are invalid or you don't have
  83.      write access to that drive and directory,or enough space on the drive,
  84.      the Acrobat Reader installation fails, and returns the errors "Cannot
  85.      load the language library", "Cannot load the license agreement", or
  86.      "Not enough free disk space to continue installation".
  87.  
  88.      Do one or more of the following:
  89.  
  90.         o Ensure there is at least 4-8MB free disk space available on the
  91.           hard drive onto which Acrobat Reader is being installed.
  92.  
  93.         o Ensure the "Set temp=" line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT is valid:
  94.  
  95.             1. Open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in a text editor that saves as
  96.                text-only (e.g., Windows Write, Notepad).
  97.             2. Locate the line that reads "Set temp=" and verify the drive
  98.                and directory following the equal sign are valid. When the
  99.                "Set temp=" line points to an invalid drive or directory,
  100.                edit the line to point to a valid drive and directory, then
  101.                save the file as text-only.
  102.             3. Reboot the computer.
  103.  
  104.         o Ensure you have write access to the drive where the TEMP directory
  105.           is located.
  106.  
  107. Windows 95 Issues
  108.  
  109.      Acrobat Exchange and Reader 2.1 are Windows 95 compatible applications,
  110.      but they are not yet Windows 95 logo compliant. This means they will
  111.      run under Windows 95 but may not meet all of Microsoft's guidelines for
  112.      complete Windows 95 compliance, such as various user interface
  113.      elements, long filenames, etc. A Windows 95 logo-compliant verions of
  114.      Acrobat Reader is scheduled for early 1996.
  115.  
  116.      Toolbar - If you change the 3D Objects color in the Display Properties
  117.      dialog (Appearance panel) the activated buttons in the toolbar will not
  118.      display properly. For best results, use the Windows Standard color
  119.      scheme.
  120.  
  121.      n-up Printing - n-up printing from Acrobat Exchange does not work with
  122.      the standard PostScript printer driver installed by Windows 95. n-up
  123.      printing is supported by the AdobePS 3.01 (or later) driver.
  124.  
  125. Weblink Plug-in Issues
  126.  
  127.      Spyglass Mosaic under Win32s crashes intermittantly when a download is
  128.      cancelled from Weblink.
  129.  
  130.      An invalid gopher URL (e.g. gopher://example.com/pub/test.pdf) will
  131.      download an error message as a text file with the PDF file name.
  132.      Acrobat Reader will return the message "There was an error opening this
  133.      document. File does not begin with %PDF-".
  134.  
  135.      If the web browser is busy contacting the host for over one minute,
  136.      Weblink will return the message "The web browser has not responded to
  137.      your request for over 1 minute: terminating request". The browser may
  138.      not respond to Weblink's attempt to cancel; use the web browser button
  139.      in the toolbar to activate the browser and manually cancel the request.
  140.  
  141. PCL Printing Issues
  142.  
  143.      The printer drivers shipped with Microsoft Windows 3.1 for the HP
  144.      LaserJet III, IIID, IIIP, and IIISi printers may not work well with
  145.      Acrobat Reader (and other applications for that matter). Adobe
  146.      recommends you use a PCL printer driver based on the Universal Printer
  147.      Driver V.3.1.2. Here are four ways to get this driver:
  148.  
  149.         o COMPUSERVE. Type "GO MSL" to get to the Microsoft Software Library
  150.           forum. Download the file named HPPCL5.EXE. Place this file on an
  151.           empty, formatted DOS diskette then from DOS run the file to
  152.           extract the driver and installation instructions which are in the
  153.           file named printer.txt.
  154.  
  155.         o MICROSOFT'S BULLETIN BOARD. Microsoft's bulletin-board download
  156.           service can be reached at 206-936-6735. It supports up to 9600
  157.           baud and you should set up your modem to use 8-bit, 1 stop bit,
  158.           and no parity. Once connected, there is a menu-driven bulletin
  159.           board. Download the file named "HPPCL5.EXE" and follow the same
  160.           directions as above.
  161.  
  162.         o MICROSOFT. If you don't have a modem, you may call Microsoft
  163.           directly at 206-637-7098 or 800-426-9400 and obtain the LaserJet
  164.           III printer drivers on a diskette.
  165.  
  166.         o HEWLETT PACKARD. Again, if you don't have a modem, you may call
  167.           Hewlett Packard directly at 303-353-7650 and obtain the LaserJet
  168.           III printer drivers on a diskette. You may also use this number to
  169.           obtain the latest printer drivers for the HP LaserJet 4, DeskJet,
  170.           and PaintJet families of printers.
  171.  
  172.      If you experience problems printing to HP LaserJet printers in the
  173.      600-dpi mode try switching back to 300-dpi mode or if it is equipped
  174.      with a PostScript option, use the PostScript mode for 600-dpi printing.
  175.      This 600-dpi PCL5 printing problem does not seem specific to Acrobat.
  176.  
  177.      Documents with various graphic images may not print correctly to the
  178.      LaserJet 4 in PCL mode at 600 dpi unless the Graphics option in the
  179.      Windows printer driver setup is set to Raster mode.
  180.  
  181.      To increase printer performance of documents formatted entirely in
  182.      landscape orientation to non- PostScript printers the printer driver
  183.      must be set in landscape orientation in the Windows printer setup.
  184.  
  185. Postscript Printing Issues
  186.  
  187.      AdobePS 3.01 driver - For best results when printing to PostScript
  188.      printers, Adobe recommends you use the AdobePS 3.01 (or later) driver.
  189.      The driver and installation instructions are included on the Adobe
  190.      Acrobat 2.1 Sampler CD.
  191.  
  192.      AdobePS 2.1.1 Driver - You may experience problems when printing from
  193.      Acrobat Reader 2.1 when using the AdobePS 2.1.1 printer driver. The
  194.      problems occur in printing certain documents that use TrueType fonts or
  195.      extended characters, such as typographic quote marks. A PSPrinter 2.1.2
  196.      update that fixes both of these problems is available. The AdobePS
  197.      2.1.2 update upgrades an installed version of AdobePS 2.1.1 to 2.1.2 is
  198.      available from the following sources:
  199.  
  200.         o COMPUSERVE. Type GO ADOBE to get to the Adobe forum.
  201.  
  202.         o FTP. Adobe's ftp Server is at ftp.adobe.com. The path to the
  203.           updater is
  204.           ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/Applications/Drivers/Windows/adobeps.exe
  205.  
  206.         o WORLD WIDE WEB. Adobe's World Wide Web server is at
  207.           http://www.adobe.com.
  208.  
  209.         o PHONE. Call 800-521-1976 to have the AdobePS 2.1.2 update disk
  210.           sent to you directly. Shipping and handling charges may apply.
  211.  
  212.      Note: The update is not the complete, standalone AdobePS 2.1.2 driver.
  213.      It will only update a previously installed version of AdobePS 2.1.1.
  214.  
  215.      Memory Issues If you encounter problems, such as as VMerror, printing
  216.      to PostScript Level 1 or 2 printers it may be because the printer has
  217.      little available memory (for example, a non-upgraded LaserWriter,
  218.      LaserWriter Plus, LaserWriter II NT or NTX). There are two potential
  219.      solutions to this problem:
  220.  
  221.         o In the General Preferences dialog (select from the
  222.           Edit/Preferences menu) you may choose to use Serif only or Sans
  223.           only for font substituion. This frees up additional memory in the
  224.           printer and chances are your document will print successfully.
  225.         o The other option is to purchase more memory for your printer.
  226.  
  227.      Apple Personal LaserWriter NT If you are using an Apple Personal
  228.      LaserWriter NT printer that has not been upgraded to a Personal
  229.      LaserWriter NTR, Acrobat Reader won't be able to print substitute
  230.      fonts. Contact your Apple dealer for information on upgrading your
  231.      printer.
  232.  
  233. Miscellaneous Issues
  234.  
  235.      CANON BJC 800 PRINTER In order to properly print text, graphics, and
  236.      images to this printer be sure to check the Use Print Manager option in
  237.      the Printers control panel.
  238.  
  239.      CANON LBP-8IV Use the printers bitmap mode for best results.
  240.  
  241.      COMPAQ MGA8.DRV VIDEO DRIVER Using this video driver (installed on
  242.      Compaq DeskproXL 586 (1024x768, 640x480, 256 colors) with Compaq
  243.      Qvision 2000 board may cause Acrobat Reader to crash. Solution: Turn
  244.      off Page Caching in the Edit > Preferences > General dialog.
  245.  
  246.      HP DESKJET 500C This printer has an unprintable area near the top of
  247.      the page. Be sure to use the Shrink to Fit option in Acrobat Reader's
  248.      Print dialog.
  249.  
  250.      FONT NOT FOUND A font not found error may indicate that ATM did not
  251.      have enough memory to create a substitute font. See the Improving
  252.      Performance section of this file for information on how to increase the
  253.      memory available to ATM (if installed).
  254.  
  255.      INSTALL Due to problems with some Desktop Managers, during installation
  256.      the Adobe Acrobat program group and the Acrobat Reader program item may
  257.      not be created. By default, the program is installed in the directory
  258.      c:\acroread and the executable is c:\acroread\acroread.exe.
  259.  
  260.      LOTUS NOTES When you open an embedded PDF file from a Notes database,
  261.      the Acrobat Reader window may seem to flicker slightly. This is because
  262.      Lotus Notes is giving Acrobat Reader OLE instructions to Show, Hide,
  263.      then Show the PDF document.
  264.  
  265.      MACH 32 VIDEO CARD FROM ATI If you are using the MACH 32 ATI card, be
  266.      sure to use the 256-color mode with the Color Pallette ON. In other
  267.      words, do not use the 256-color mode with the color pallette off. For
  268.      Acrobat, make sure the Pallette is ON.
  269.  
  270.      NEC ULTRALITE VERSA LINEAR DRIVER Rotated images may display with
  271.      artifacts when using the UltraLite Versa Linear 640x480 256 color video
  272.      driver. Solution: Use the UltraLite Versa 640x480 256 color driver.
  273.  
  274.      NUMBER 9 VIDEO DRIVER When Acrobat Reader's page caching is enabled, if
  275.      you experience horizontal lines running across the page try turning off
  276.      the turbo mode in the #9GXE video driver. This can be done via the
  277.      Turbo menu in the program π#9GXE StatusΣ available in the #9 Hawkeye
  278.      Control Panel.
  279.  
  280.      PAGE CACHING Page caching is disabled for 16-bit and 24-bit displays
  281.      and the option is grayed out in the General Preferences dialog.
  282.  
  283.      PATTERNS Files produced by the Acrobat Distiller containing patterns
  284.      may display slowly and cause memory shortages. This can often be the
  285.      case when applications represent patterns as thousands of small Type 3
  286.      font characters. If you experience this problem, it is recommended to
  287.      use color rather than pattern fills.
  288.  
  289.      PC TOOLS FOR WINDOWS 1.0 No Adobe Acrobat group is created and no
  290.      program items/icons are created. See INSTALL problem above for
  291.      description of workaround.
  292.  
  293.      PHONENET PhoneNet does not properly map Macintosh file names containing
  294.      upper-ASCII characters. As a result, you will not be able to open any
  295.      such files in Acrobat Reader. Solution: Don't use special characters in
  296.      file names to be accessed by both Macintosh and Windows users over a
  297.      PhoneNet network.
  298.  
  299.      PRINTING FROM FILE MANAGER Only one PDF file at a time can be selected
  300.      and printed from the File Manager.
  301.  
  302.      ROTATED/TRANSFORMED TRUETYPE FONTS You may encounter some problems with
  303.      displaying or printing rotated or otherwise transformed TrueType fonts.
  304.      This is a limitation of TrueType and Windows. For best results, we
  305.      recommend you use Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts in your documents.
  306.  
  307.      STANDARD MODE Acrobat Reader 2.1 does not work in standard mode; you
  308.      must be running Windows 3.1 in enhanced mode.
  309.  
  310.      SYSHOOK Syshook is an application that patches the system menus of
  311.      applications; it does not work well with Acrobat Reader.
  312.  
  313.      TRUE TYPE TrueType fonts cannot be reencoded. Because of this
  314.      limitation, documents that were created using some special characters
  315.      in a Type 1 font may not display correctly if a TrueType version of the
  316.      font with the same name is installed on your system. When this happens,
  317.      the error message ü½ome text in the font and character 'FONTNAME ###'
  318.      could not be displayed or printed correctly. The font could not be
  319.      reencoded.Σ is displayed. Since the Acrobat installers do not replace
  320.      TrueType versions of Times, Helvetica, and Courier you may get this
  321.      message with these fonts. Solution: Use the Custom Install option to
  322.      install a Type 1 version of these fonts.
  323.  
  324.      WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS The Windows for Workgroups Netware extensions
  325.      (\windows\netx.com) have been known to cause problems with Acrobat
  326.      Reader's Open dialog, as well as other application╠∩ Open dialog.
  327.      Solution: Contact Microsoft.
  328.  
  329.      WRONG COLORS If the colors on your monitor seem completely wrong, try
  330.      the following. In the Acrobat Reader's ini file
  331.      (c:\windows\acroread.ini) try changing the line 'IS8514=4' to
  332.      'IS8514=105'.
  333.
